Yesterday members of the Stony Monday Riot took their first away trip to Rochester to see OFFC take on the Rochester Rhinos of USL Pro at Sahlen Stadium.
Despite below freezing temperatures and waking up at 5am in order to ensure we make the 1pm start time, I would have to say it was worth it.
Sahlen Stadium is located in Rochester’s Dutchtown neighbourhood which isn’t far from downtown. The stadium was built there with the intentions that it would revitalized the neighbourhood. Unfortunately it appears after many years revitalization has not occurred.
The Rhinos have been successful on and off the field over the years and in multiple leagues as members of the A-League, USL and USL Pro. The stadium is also home to NWSL side Western NY Flash, home to local star Abby Wambach. Both teams have drawn well over 10, 000 fans on many occasions. On this cold pre-season friday afternoon maybe drop three zeroes.
New Pre Game Tradition?
The Fury FC started a very different line up then the one we saw last Saturday against York University. The majority of the players are signed players in this game. It was a good chance to finally see these guys play together.
In the first half OFFC held most of the possession. Some really nice play by Richie Ryan in the middle. Also quality from Tommy Heinemann winning many balls in the air and using his big frame to protect the ball in the final third of the pitch. Oliver Minatel drew a penalty and this time he took the PK scoring for the second time in as many games. Later in the half Minh Vu of the Rhinos capitalized on a communication error by keeper Marcel DeBellis and the Fury back line.
The second half saw a few changes. Tensions came to a boiling point with an incident involving our defender Omar Jarun. There were multiple cards shown including a red. Confusingly nobody left the pitch and both teams stayed 11 a side. The incident was serious enough there were staff from both teams on the field and one Rhino player had to have a cut by his eye treated on the sideline. In the 2nd the Rhinos had more opportunities and carried the play more often than Fury FC. The game ended 1-1.
After the match we headed down to the famous Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in downtown Rochester for some amazing food and local craft beer. This place was highly recommended and did not disappoint. Friendly waitresses that call you “darlin” and the whole bit. Hopefully it will become a pre-season tradition.
Tasty Rohrbach and Matt Brewing Company beers!
